Student Investor Challengehistorically run by The London Institute of Banking & Finance, LIBF

For students in British-curriculum settings or drawn to UK financial education, the Student Investor Challenge is a rare free, low-barrier investment contest that can lead to a live final in London. The twin-portfolio design - a fast Active book and a constrained Strategic book - trains discipline better than a single stock-picking game, and the idle-cash penalty is a realistic touch. Irvine families should note the limitation, though: prizes and progression past round one are restricted to UK teams, so a U.S.-based student can only enter round one and compete for International Trader of the Year. Treat it as evidence of interest and skill rather than a major admissions credential.

Organizer
Student Investor Challenge; historically operated by The London Institute of Banking & Finance (LIBF), which renamed itself Walbrook Institute London in 2025
Eligibility
Students aged 14-19 in teams of four, registered by a teacher using a seven-digit Teacher Reference Number. Teams outside the UK may take part but only in round one, competing solely for the International Online Trader of the Year prize; semifinals and the grand final are open to UK teams only. Teachers may enter their own teams against students but are not eligible for prizes.
Format
Three rounds. In round one each team runs two portfolios of 100,000 pounds each: an Active Investor book traded daily and a Strategic Investor book with a capped number of monthly trades that rewards patience. Prices come from live London Stock Exchange data, and a Windfall Tax of 1,000 pounds a day applies whenever either portfolio holds more than 15,000 pounds in cash, forcing teams to stay invested; late entrants have their opening balance index-linked to the FTSE 100. Round two is a four-week online semifinal for 500 UK teams, selected in stages - the top 250 on combined performance, then the top 100 on Active alone, the top 100 on Strategic alone, and the 50 best January Active gainers. Each week teams predict Friday closing prices of selected assets, scored on accuracy and how long a prediction is held, with the best three of four weeks counting. The eight strongest teams attend a live national final in London built around business challenges.
Fees
Participation is free. In past years teachers registered in the fall and trading began before mid-November, but as of September 2026 the official site had not published a specific registration deadline for this season, so confirm it with the organizer.
Awards
The winning team and its teacher receive an all-expenses week in New York including the financial district, 200 pounds of spending money, and a 1,000-pound scholarship per member with assessment recognition. Runners-up receive a VIP London trip or experience voucher, 150 pounds spending money and a 750-pound scholarship each; third place receives a London trip or voucher plus 100 pounds each. Online Trader of the Year (UK) pays 150 pounds per member and International Trader of the Year (overseas teams) pays 100 pounds per member. The scholarships apply to the first year of an undergraduate degree at The London Institute of Banking & Finance, subject to entry requirements.

About the competition

The Student Investor Challenge is a UK-wide stock market simulation for students aged 14-19, run for many years by The London Institute of Banking & Finance and peaking at more than eight thousand teams. Teams of four are registered by a teacher.

In round one each team runs two virtual portfolios of 100,000 pounds: an Active Investor book traded daily, testing reaction to news, and a Strategic Investor book with capped monthly trades, testing longer-horizon allocation.

Prices come from live London Stock Exchange data, and an unusual rule applies a 1,000-pound daily Windfall Tax whenever either book holds more than 15,000 pounds in cash, mimicking the pressure on a real fund not to sit idle.

After round one, 500 UK teams enter a four-week online semifinal that switches to forecasting: each week teams predict Friday closing prices of selected assets, scored on accuracy and holding duration, with the best three of four weeks counting. The top eight attend a live final in London, where the winners and their teacher earn a week-long educational trip to New York.

One organizational caveat: LIBF renamed itself Walbrook Institute London in 2025, its former competition page now redirects to walbrook.ac.uk without competition content, and the challenge material now sits at studentinvestor.org, so confirm this season’s dates with that site directly.

How to prepare

  • Run the two books on two different logics: the Active portfolio trains disciplined stop-losses and reaction to news, the Strategic one trains patience. Do not manage both the same way.
  • Watch the Windfall Tax - 1,000 pounds a day whenever either book holds over 15,000 pounds in cash - so staying invested matters more than timing, and sitting out has a real cost.
  • The semifinal scores forecasting, not returns, on both accuracy and how long a prediction is held, so committing early and holding beats waiting until Friday to place a call.
  • U.S.-based students should check eligibility first: overseas teams take part in round one only and compete for International Trader of the Year, while semifinals and the final are UK-only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an Irvine student take part in the LIBF Student Investor Challenge?

They can register but only play round one. The official rules state that teams from schools outside the UK take part in round one only and compete for the International Online Trader of the Year prize, while the semifinal of 500 UK teams and the eight-team final are limited to UK teams. The site's homepage has also recently described the challenge as being for UK students, so confirm overseas eligibility with the organizer first.

Is LIBF still the organizer of the Student Investor Challenge?

The name has changed. The London Institute of Banking & Finance renamed itself Walbrook Institute London in 2025, and the old libf.ac.uk competition page now redirects to walbrook.ac.uk without competition content. The challenge itself lives at studentinvestor.org, while the scholarship terms still reference undergraduate study at The London Institute of Banking & Finance - a discrepancy worth confirming with the organizer before entering.

Does an Irvine student need a school club to enter the Student Investor Challenge?

No dedicated club is required, but a teacher must register the team using a seven-digit Teacher Reference Number, with four students per team; a school without a TRN has the teacher request one from the organizer first. In practice, an Irvine student does not need an existing investment club - finding one teacher willing to register a team is enough, and that teacher may also enter a team of their own alongside students, though without being eligible for prizes. Entry itself is free - there is no registration fee.

What is the difference between the two Student Investor Challenge portfolios?

Each team runs two virtual portfolios of £100,000 each on live London Stock Exchange prices. The Active Investor book allows daily trading and rewards disciplined stop-losses and reaction to news; the Strategic Investor book permits only limited monthly trades and rewards patience. They need genuinely different logic - applying one trading approach to both books is the most common mistake teams make.

How does the Student Investor Challenge idle cash tax work?

If either portfolio holds more than £15,000 in cash, a daily windfall tax of £1,000 applies. Sitting on the sidelines therefore has a real, compounding cost, and staying invested usually matters more than timing an entry. Teams should decide up front how much cash cushion each book will carry and set their trading rhythm accordingly, or the drag over several weeks becomes substantial.

What are the Student Investor Challenge prizes?

The winning team and its teacher get a fully funded week-long educational trip to New York plus £200 spending money, with £1,000 scholarships for each team member. Runners-up receive a London VIP experience, £150 and £750 scholarships each; third place gets a London trip and £100 each. The scholarships apply to a first undergraduate year at The London Institute of Banking & Finance, so they are of limited value to families not planning UK study.

When does registration open for the Student Investor Challenge this season?

As of September 2026 the organizers have not published this season's registration deadline. In past years teachers registered in the autumn, round one trading began by mid-November, and the semifinal and final followed in the spring. Treat studentinvestor.org as the authority on dates and have the teacher sign up for notifications there by late September rather than relying on a secondhand calendar.

Does the LIBF Student Investor Challenge help an Irvine student's U.S. college applications?

Only modestly - treat it as evidence of interest rather than a headline award. Students based in the U.S. can play round one and compete for International Trader of the Year but cannot earn a comparable placement, and U.S. admissions readers are unfamiliar with the system. On a UC application's activities list, it reads better alongside competitions with public tiered systems, such as the Wharton Investment Competition, the National Economics Challenge or DECA, rather than as a standalone headline.
