SAT or ACT, how do we choose?
Take one official practice test of each, then decide. The SAT is now digital, with reading and writing plus math, scored out of 1600; the ACT adds a science section and moves faster. Most US universities accept either, so the deciding factor is where the student scores higher and more consistently.
When should Irvine public high school students test?
A common rhythm is building grammar and reading in grades 9 to 10 and testing in grade 11. The SAT Grammar/Reading Seminar runs 35 weeks on Sundays for grades 9 to 11 and handles the part that needs long accumulation. The Digital SAT sprint handles diagnostics, practice tests, and score work close to the test date. AP exams fall in May, so Irvine students taking AP courses should keep the dates apart.
What changed with the Digital SAT?
Both the format and the question logic. The Digital SAT is taken in dedicated software, reading passages are much shorter with usually one question each, a calculator is allowed throughout the math section, and the test is shorter than the paper version. Preparation shifts from long-passage stamina toward precise work on single questions.
How do the seminar and the sprint fit together?
The seminar builds ability; the sprint converts it into a score. The year-long seminar targets SAT grammar and reading and suits students more than a year from the test. The Digital SAT sprint includes a diagnostic, reading/writing and math modules, and four full-length tests, and suits students with a test date set.
Is the summer boot camp right for Irvine students?
It suits students planning to test in the fall. The intensive runs three weeks before the test, in two sessions of 8 to 10 students, with a full-length test in the morning and review in the afternoon, so testing and correction stay in one continuous block. During the school year there are also the year-long SAT Reading class and the spring grammar and vocabulary class.
Do test scores still matter for Irvine families?
They matter more than they did a few years ago, since leading universities have been reinstating testing requirements. Standardized test planning is one of the eight college admissions services; we recommend setting the test calendar alongside GPA, competitions, and activities rather than in isolation.
