Business Professionals of America (BPA) Competitive Events

The biggest difference is how many BPA events are hands-on computer work. Its assessment areas cover spreadsheet modeling, databases, cybersecurity, programming, graphic design and accounting, and students complete real tasks in specified software under time limits rather than presenting cases. For applicants heading toward information systems, business analytics or accounting, a BPA event name states the skill directly.

Entry is only through a chartered school chapter; there is no individual registration, so start by checking with the school whether one already exists. If not, a teacher can submit a request on the Start a Chapter page at bpa.org; national staff will issue a Membership Registration System login and connect the school with the California state adviser. Plan on starting this at least a semester ahead. While a chapter is getting set up, a student can still work through the production-event format in EDUBUS's BPA prep course.

Worth it, especially in a first year. Open Events require no prior qualification: students can enter them directly at the state or national conference, in unlimited numbers. They don't count against the regular event cap, so they pair well with a student's main event.

A Secondary division student may enter at most two regular competitive events, and only one of them can be a team event; Open Events do not count against that cap. Map the conference schedule with your adviser before choosing, since two events can be scheduled at the same time and the on-site schedule cannot be changed. The Middle Level division follows the same limit.

The 2027 NLC is scheduled for May 5-9 at the Gaylord Rockies Convention Center in Denver, Colorado, serving the Middle Level, Secondary and Postsecondary divisions. Spots are earned through regional and state placement, and travel and lodging are the family's responsibility, normally booked as a group through the chapter.

National dues are set centrally while each state association sets its own state dues, and the combined figure is commonly a couple of dozen dollars per member - but California's exact amount should be confirmed with your chapter adviser or the state adviser. Regional, state and national conferences each carry separate registration fees, with travel and hotel on top for nationals, and BPA publishes no single total.

Yes. BPA has three student divisions - Middle Level, Secondary and Postsecondary - and the Middle Level division has its own event list, with its national competition also held at the NLC. For a child already learning to code or design, starting BPA in middle school is an easier way to build a portfolio than waiting until high school.

Through repetition, not improvisation. Practice in the exact software version BPA specifies and under the real time limit, because you cannot look up documentation or use outside materials at the event. Pick the assessment area first - for example management information systems, or digital communication and design - then the specific event, so an existing technical strength carries the work.
