DECA High School Competitive EventsDistrict CDC, State CDC and ICDC

DECA is the mainstream route through the American high school business-club system, with well over two hundred thousand members, and admissions readers understand its tiers: a district placement says you are strong locally, a state placement says you can compete in California, and an ICDC top ten is a national signal. Just as valuable are the transferable skills - reading a case against the clock, structuring an argument, and pitching to an unfamiliar judge - which are exactly what business interviews and university case clubs demand. The 2027 ICDC is in Anaheim, a home-field advantage for Irvine students.

Organizer
DECA Inc.
Eligibility
Students must be dues-paid members of a chartered school DECA chapter and entered in the national membership portal before the posted deadlines. Members are typically high schoolers enrolled in marketing, business management, finance or hospitality CTE coursework. In California students compete first at a District CDC, then at the State CDC, and state placement determines the ICDC delegation.
Format
Events fall into several families: Principles of Business Administration for first-year members, Individual Series (role-play plus an exam), Team Decision Making (two students analyzing a case), Personal Financial Literacy, Business Operations Research, Project Management, Entrepreneurship (individual or teams of up to three), Integrated Marketing Campaign, Professional Selling and Consulting, plus online events such as the Stock Market Game and the Virtual Business Challenge. Role-play events give competitors a scenario on the spot, limited prep time, and an oral presentation to a judge playing an executive; prepared events pair a written report with a live presentation. For 2026-27 every evaluation form has been rewritten, Team Decision Making cases carry only five performance indicators, and Career Competencies replace the former 21st Century Skills.
Contest dates
January 8, 2027 · January 15, 2027 · February 25, 2027 · April 17, 2027
Fees
Membership dues are collected separately at the national and state levels and the amount differs by chapter; the District CDC, the State CDC and the ICDC also carry conference registration fees and designated hotel costs, and the ICDC requires staying at an official hotel for at least four nights. Confirm the exact amounts with the school's DECA adviser.
Awards
Each level awards medallions and trophies to the top finishers in every event, and top-ten finishers at the State CDC earn an ICDC berth after filing an Intent to Compete. At ICDC the top ten worldwide in each event are announced on stage at the Grand Awards Session, and DECA also offers scholarships, School-Based Enterprise certification and the Emerging Leader Honor Award.

About the competition

DECA is one of the oldest and largest high school business organizations in the United States, built around five career areas - marketing, finance, hospitality and tourism, business management and administration, and entrepreneurship - with its Competitive Events program at the center.

A student joins a chartered school chapter as a dues-paid member and then picks an event: an individual role-play, where competitors receive a business scenario and a set of performance indicators, prepare for about ten minutes, and present to a judge acting as an executive; a two-person Team Decision Making case; or a prepared written project such as a business plan, an integrated marketing campaign or an operations research report.

California’s ladder is clear. Students compete at one of three District CDCs in January 2027, top finishers advance to the State CDC in Anaheim at the end of February, and top-ten state finishers claim ICDC places. ICDC, the culmination of the year, runs April 17-20, 2027 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The real barrier is not difficulty but deadlines: affiliation, membership entry, registration and payment all have hard cutoffs months ahead.

How to prepare

  • In the first week of September confirm with your school's DECA advisor that the chapter is affiliated and note the mid-November membership deadline - it is the step families miss most often.
  • In role-play events, name and address each performance indicator explicitly, because the evaluation form scores exactly those items; rehearse with a classmate as judge under strict prep and presentation timing.
  • Finish a first draft of any prepared event - business plan, integrated marketing campaign - by December, since uploads for district conferences close in a fixed window and cannot be edited afterwards.
  • Every evaluation form was rewritten for 2026-27 and Career Competencies replaced 21st Century Skills, so download the current official guidelines rather than reusing an older student's materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if an Irvine student's high school has no DECA chapter?

Some Irvine Unified high schools already have a related club - Northwood High School's DECA Business Club, and Portola High School's Portola Business, which covers both DECA and FBLA - so start by asking a business or CTE teacher whether the school already has an affiliated chapter. If it genuinely doesn't, a teacher can charter a new chapter with DECA Inc., but affiliation has an annual deadline and realistically takes a year of lead time. If this year is already closed, FBLA, BPA or an outside entrepreneurship competition are the practical alternatives.

Where is DECA ICDC 2027 being held?

At the Anaheim Convention Center, April 17-20, 2027. For Irvine families that is a drive of roughly half an hour, which makes this an unusually convenient year - no flights, and parents can attend. Note that DECA still requires every attendee to stay in the official hotel assigned to their state association for a minimum of four nights, so commuting from home is not permitted.

How does a California student qualify for DECA ICDC?

California uses three tiers: the District CDC in your area, then the State CDC, with ICDC berths determined by state placement and confirmed through an Intent to Compete form. For 2027 the SoCal SCDC is January 8-10, Silicon Valley the same weekend, and NorCal January 15-17. Top state finishes qualify, but California DECA publishes the exact allocation for each event every year.

When are DECA dues due, and can a student compete after the deadline?

Members must be entered in the national membership system by the posted deadline to be eligible to compete - in California that falls in mid-November, roughly two months before district competition. Miss it and the student waits a full year; this is the single most common way families lose the season. Confirm your chapter's own dues amount and deadline with the advisor in the first week of school.

An Irvine ninth grader is new to business - which DECA event fits?

Start with the Principles of Business Administration series, which is designed specifically for first-year members and asks the student to explain a few core business concepts under the most forgiving rubric. Move to an Individual Series role-play or a two-person Team Decision Making event in year two. Written events such as entrepreneurship plans and business operations research suit students who already have a real project to write about; if a student is also taking a school economics or business course, picking an event that lines up with that coursework can help.

How do DECA role-plays actually work, and how do you practice?

The student draws a business scenario with a list of performance indicators, gets ten minutes to prepare and ten minutes to present to a judge playing the client. The rubric scores those indicators one by one, so the trick is to name and address each one explicitly rather than talking around the problem. Practice with a classmate as judge, keep strict time, and record it to check pacing and eye contact.

What does a year of DECA cost an Irvine student?

DECA does not publish a single figure. Costs come in three layers: national and California membership dues, usually tens of dollars per student; registration for the district and state conferences; and, for those who qualify, ICDC registration plus the required four-night stay in the official hotel. ICDC is by far the largest item. Amounts vary by chapter, so ask your school's DECA advisor directly.

DECA or FBLA - what is the difference and which should we pick?

DECA centers on marketing, retail, hospitality and finance, and its signature format is a timed case read followed by a live role-play. FBLA spans a wider range in one system: accounting, economics, coding, web design and public speaking. Choose DECA for students who think on their feet, FBLA for students converting an existing technical or academic strength into an award. Doing both works if the school has both chapters and the dates do not clash.
