FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Competitive Events

No individual registration is possible. FBLA eligibility comes from paid membership in a chartered school chapter, which requires a teacher adviser and chapter registration with both national and California FBLA. In Irvine Unified, Portola High School already runs Portola Business, a club covering both DECA and FBLA; if your school doesn't have a chapter yet, contact California FBLA at hello@cafbla.org to ask about chartering one and whether it's still realistic to make this year's section conference.

Orange County sits in California FBLA's Southern Section. The 2027 Southern Section Leadership Conference is set for January 16 at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, about twenty minutes from Irvine. It is a one-day conference where delegates elect section officers and take the first round of competitive events, and qualifying results advance students to the April state conference.

The 2027 California FBLA SLC runs April 22-25 in San Jose; the conference rotates between northern and southern California each year and draws over 2,500 students. Placement at SLC determines who advances to the National Leadership Conference, which is June 23-26, 2027. California has also announced that the 2028 SLC will be March 30 to April 2 in Anaheim.

California's unified state-and-national dues have recently run about $11 per high school member and $5 per middle level member, plus section dues billed to the chapter; conference registration and lodging are separate. California sets March 1 as the money-received deadline for state and national conference eligibility, but if a student is entered in an event with an earlier deadline, that earlier date governs. Amounts change, so confirm on the official site.

Yes. FBLA has a Middle School division with its own event list, its national competition also takes place at the NLC, and California charges lower middle level dues. The real value at that age is learning the conference format and getting comfortable presenting, so the move into the high school division later is smooth. Yes. FBLA events split into objective tests and production or presentation events. Accounting, economics, business law and computer applications are timed multiple-choice tests where past papers are the best preparation, while business plan, social media strategies, web design and public speaking require a live presentation. A student who dislikes the stage can place in the testing events first and add a presentation event the following year.

They do change, so reusing old materials is risky. FBLA publishes updated competitive event guidelines around September each year, and the event list, topic scope and rating sheets can all shift; entering a discontinued or redefined event costs more than being underprepared. Rating sheets for production events are public with explicit weightings, so build the work against the current year's sheet rather than a past template.

It does, but the level matters. FBLA is a federally recognized CTE student organization and California FBLA is authorized by the state Department of Education, so admissions readers understand the section-state-national ladder. A national placement carries real weight and a strong state finish still says something concrete, while membership alone reads as an ordinary club activity.
