International Economics Olympiad (IEO), with the US selection route USAEBO

The IEO is the international olympiad for economics, part of the same national-team system as the mathematics and physics olympiads, which makes it far scarcer than an ordinary business competition - the United States sends only five students a year. For Irvine students targeting top economics programs, even a Round 2 medal in USAEBO is a nationally comparable credential. And because USAEBO Round 1 is open to everyone and taken online, the cost of trying is minimal for any student who has done AP Economics.

Organizer
International Economics Olympiad (IEO); U.S. national selection by USA Economics and Business Olympiad (USAEBO)
Eligibility
IEO contestants must be under 20 on 30 June of the Olympiad year, and each country sends at most five students with one or two team leaders. The U.S. route, USAEBO, is open to entrants of any citizenship, but to be named to Team USA a student must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident (green card holder), or a full-time middle or high school student studying in the U.S., and be 20 or under on the first day of the IEO.
Format
The international Olympiad has three components: a 40-question Finance and Economics multiple-choice paper, a Finance and Economics open-question paper of five problems of which contestants answer four, and a team Business Case presented in English to a panel of judges. The U.S. selection contest, USAEBO, is individual and has two rounds. Round 1 is open to everyone: 40 multiple-choice problems taken digitally in one hour, with Distinguished Honor Roll, High Honor Roll and Honor Roll recognition. Qualifiers sit Round 2, a two-hour digital open-response paper requiring shown reasoning, awarding Gold, Silver, Bronze and Honorable Mention. Both rounds must be proctored with the required technology, and cheating carries a permanent ban. Five students from Round 2 form Team USA.
Contest dates
March 13, 2027 · March 27, 2027
Fees
The IEO website states that taking part in the international round is itself free. The 2027 page on the USAEBO website does not publish a registration fee amount, so confirm it on that site's registration page; travel to the international round is normally arranged by each country's sending organization.
Awards
USAEBO awards Distinguished Honor Roll, High Honor Roll and Honor Roll in Round 1, and Gold, Silver, Bronze and Honorable Mention in Round 2, from which five students are selected for Team USA. The IEO itself awards individual gold, silver and bronze medals, special honors such as Best in Economics, and placements in the team Business Case. For reference, Team USA won one gold, one silver and one bronze at the 2026 IEO in Shenzhen, China.

About the competition

Founded in 2018, the International Economics Olympiad now involves more than sixty countries and territories and is the highest-tier international contest for secondary students in economics and finance.

The international competition has three parts: a 40-question multiple-choice paper on finance and economics; an open-question paper of five problems from which contestants answer four, demanding full economic reasoning; and a team business case presented in English to judges, which tests knowledge, writing and delivery together.

The 2026 edition was held in Shenzhen, China with 54 participating countries and territories; Japan hosts in 2027 in Tokyo, with dates to be confirmed officially. The sole U.S. route is the USA Economics and Business Olympiad, an individual two-round contest. Round 1 in mid-March is open to anyone: 40 multiple-choice problems taken digitally in one hour, with three tiers of honor roll.

Qualifiers sit a two-hour open-response Round 2 in late March that requires shown reasoning and awards gold, silver and bronze, and five students are then selected for Team USA. Both rounds require the specified proctoring technology, and USAEBO enforces a permanent ban for cheating.

How to prepare

  • Build a solid base in AP Micro and Macro first, then add finance - time value of money, valuation, risk and return - because the finance questions in IEO and USAEBO sit outside the AP syllabus.
  • Round 1 is pure multiple choice, 40 problems in an hour, so speed and fundamentals matter; Round 2 is a different exercise entirely, rewarding a clearly written chain of reasoning, so practise on the published past Round 2 problems.
  • The international business case is a team presentation in English, so if the national team is the goal, practise structured delivery - define the problem, support with data, propose, address risk.
  • Mind the proctoring requirements: both rounds must be recorded using the specified technology, so test equipment and connection in advance rather than losing a score to a process failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a non-U.S. citizen compete in USAEBO and the IEO?

They can sit the exams. USAEBO states registration is open regardless of citizenship, so anyone may take both rounds. To be selected for Team USA at the IEO, however, a student must be a U.S. citizen, a green card holder, or a full-time middle or high school student studying in the United States, and must be 20 or under on the first day of the international competition. Students on a visa attending U.S. schools meet that third condition.

What should an Irvine student preparing for USAEBO expect from its two rounds?

Round 1 is 40 multiple-choice problems in one hour online, set for March 13, 2027 at 8 pm Eastern. Round 2 is open only to students who qualify from Round 1 and runs two hours of free-response problems where students must show their reasoning, on March 27 at 8 pm Eastern. Both rounds are taken digitally from home under the proctoring setup USAEBO specifies, so test the equipment early.

What awards does USAEBO give, and what counts as a good result?

Round 1 awards Distinguished Honor Roll, High Honor Roll and Honor Roll. Round 2 awards Gold, Silver and Bronze medals plus honorable mentions, and five students are chosen from it to represent the United States at the IEO. For most high schoolers, any Round 2 medal is already a nationally comparable credential; making Team USA is a five-slot-a-year achievement.

My child is in middle school in Irvine - can they take USAEBO?

Yes. USAEBO is open to K-12 students, and the only age limit is being 20 or under on the first day of the IEO. The difficulty sits at or above AP Economics and includes finance content outside the AP outline, so nearly all entrants are high schoolers. A middle schooler who has already worked through AP Micro and Macro loses very little by attempting Round 1, and can keep building toward it later through the Economics Olympiad club at Northwood High School in Irvine.

What does an Irvine student preparing for IEO/USAEBO need beyond AP Economics?

Finance and business. On top of micro and macro, the IEO track covers the time value of money, valuation, and risk and return, plus a team business case analysis - none of which sit in the AP outline. The usual path is to secure AP Micro and Macro first, add a separate finance block, then practice written reasoning on past open-response papers published on the official site.

How does the international IEO round work - is there a team component?

Yes. The IEO has three parts: an economics paper, a finance paper, and a team business case presented and defended in English. Each country sends at most five competitors plus one or two team leaders. Individual gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded along with special honors such as Best in Economics, and the team business case is ranked separately. For reference, Team USA took one gold, one silver and one bronze at IEO 2026 in Shenzhen.

Where is IEO 2027 and are the dates set?

Japan has been confirmed as the host, but as of September 2026 the IEO has not published exact 2027 dates or the host city; watch ieo-official.org for the announcement. The U.S. selection route is already fixed: USAEBO registration closes February 27, 2027 at 11:59 pm Eastern, Round 1 is March 13 and Round 2 is March 27.

Do USAEBO and the IEO charge Irvine students entry fees?

The IEO states that participation in the international olympiad itself is free, with travel usually arranged by each country's sending organization. USAEBO's 2027 page does not publish a registration fee, so the amount has to be checked on its own registration page - do not rely on third-party write-ups for a number the organizer has not posted. Verify fees, deadlines and proctoring requirements directly at usaebo.org.
