What does it take to be placed into Enhanced Math 7/8?
Irvine Unified School District asks for three of four conditions: an A- or better in every grading period, 85 percent or better on the end-of-course exam, 90 percent or better on the basic skills test, and a pass on the Standards for Mathematical Practice assessment.
Can Irvine students accelerate in elementary school?
No. District math acceleration begins in grade 7, and there is no skipping in the elementary years. Families aiming for the accelerated track usually prepare during grade 6, which is what the G6 math placement class is built for. Preparation there is aimed squarely at the district's placement conditions.
What materials does the class use?
The district's own math materials, following the Irvine Unified School District syllabus, so what a student practices here matches what the school teaches and tests. The course runs 35 weeks and is offered in two sections, with students placed in one of them after an assessment.
What comes after Enhanced Math 7/8 for Irvine students?
Enhanced Math I in grade 8, then Enhanced Math II in grade 9. Finishing Enhanced Math I in grade 8 is what the district requires before a student can join the accelerated high school sequence. From there the line continues to Enhanced Math III and AP Calculus.
Can an Irvine student be moved back down after placement?
At the high school level, yes. A student who enters a higher course through appeal is returned to the original course if the first grading period falls below a B. Placement and review rules by school are in the IUSD guides.
