Enhanced Math I

Where it sits in the district sequence

Enhanced Math I is the second step of the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) accelerated math path, usually taken in grade 8 after Enhanced Math 7/8. The district compacts Math 7, Math 8, and Math I into two years, so this course carries the second half of Math 8 plus all Math I standards. Taken in grade 8, it counts as a prerequisite, not high school credit. It leads to Enhanced Math II in grade 9.

What students learn (district outline)

Summarized from the IUSD “Year at a Glance - Enhanced Math I” (October 2021). Students work toward mastery of functions, systems of equations, the Pythagorean Theorem, and statistics. They build on proportional and linear relationships to understand functions and slope, use function notation, and treat functions as objects that can be combined. They compare linear and exponential functions, study arithmetic and geometric sequences, solve equations by reasoning, then solve systems of linear equations and inequalities. In statistics they compare shape, center, and spread and fit models to make predictions. In geometry they use constructions and transformations to understand congruence, apply the Pythagorean Theorem to right triangles, and extend transformations to coordinate geometry.

How EDUBUS teaches it

Grades in this course decide placement into Enhanced Math II in grade 9; the district expects strong marks in both semesters (see the IUSD guides). EDUBUS follows the district unit order, teaching each concept before district-style problems, with extra time on function notation, systems, and geometric proof. Summer sessions pre-study the first four units; during the year the class shifts to weekly reinforcement. Seminars of 6 to 8, or 1-on-1, online or in person.
