F=ma Exam and U.S. Physics OlympiadUSAPhO

F=ma and USAPhO form the only official pathway to the U.S. national team and the IPhO, which makes them the most respected physics credential a U.S. high schooler can earn. Simply qualifying for USAPhO (about 400 students nationwide), let alone medaling, is a hard, verifiable signal for engineering, physics and EECS applications — far more distinctive than a strong AP score alone.

Organizer
American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), sponsored with the American Institute of Physics (AIP)
Eligibility
F=ma: U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or students attending a U.S. school, who must be physically inside the United States on exam day (most U.S. territories other than Puerto Rico do not qualify because of time zones). USAPhO and the training camp additionally require U.S. citizenship or a green card, and students must be under 20 as of June 30 of the competition year. Both exams must be proctored; parents, relatives, and for-profit test-prep centers are not acceptable proctors.
Format
The F=ma exam is 25 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes, focused on mechanics (kinematics, Newton's laws, energy, momentum, rotation, oscillations, gravitation). Roughly the top 400 scorers are invited to USAPhO, an approximately 3-hour free-response exam covering all of introductory physics in which students must justify their answers in writing. Beginning with the 2026 cycle both exams are administered online through Educational Vistas, with no printable version.
Contest dates
February 12, 2026 · April 10, 2026
Fees
As published for the 2026 cycle, the school registration fee is $75, or $37.50 for AAPT member schools, plus $15.50 for each student; there is no further charge for USAPhO or the stages beyond it. The fee and date pages for the 2027 cycle had still not opened as of September 2026.
Awards
USAPhO awards follow International Physics Olympiad conventions: roughly the top 10–12% receive gold, followed by silver, bronze and honorable mention. About 20 top USAPhO scorers are invited to the ten-day U.S. Physics Team training camp at the University of Maryland, from which five students are chosen to represent the United States at the IPhO; recent teams have also competed at the European Physics Olympiad (EuPhO).

About the competition

The F=ma exam is the entry point to the U.S. physics olympiad pipeline, run by the American Association of Physics Teachers with the American Institute of Physics and held each February. It consists of 25 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes, drawn almost entirely from mechanics: kinematics, Newton’s laws, energy, momentum, rotation, oscillations and gravitation.

The difficulty sits well above AP Physics C — problems reward fast modeling and estimation rather than memorized formulas. Roughly the top 400 scorers are invited in April to USAPhO, an approximately three-hour written exam spanning the full introductory physics curriculum, including electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics and modern physics, where credit comes from the reasoning shown rather than the final number.

About twenty USAPhO standouts advance to a ten-day training camp at the University of Maryland, and five of them are selected as the U.S. team for the International Physics Olympiad. Eligibility matters: international students enrolled at U.S. schools may sit F=ma, but USAPhO and the camp are restricted to citizens and green-card holders.

Since the 2026 cycle both exams run online with strict proctoring rules that exclude test-prep centers.

How to prepare

  • Build fluency with the calculus-based mechanics of AP Physics C first, then switch to past F=ma papers; with about three minutes per question, pacing and question selection matter as much as raw difficulty.
  • Work full past F=ma exams under timed conditions using the official AAPT archive, then sort every miss by topic — rotation, non-inertial frames and constrained motion are the usual repeat offenders.
  • Once you qualify for USAPhO, shift practice from multiple choice to written derivations: solve symbolically, state assumptions, check units, and rehearse finishing a multi-part problem inside 90 minutes.
  • Line up proctoring early. If your school is not a site you will need a community college, university or library, since parents and for-profit centers are barred — leaving it to the deadline is risky.

Frequently Asked Questions

What F=ma score does an Irvine student need to qualify for USAPhO?

The cutoff moves every year because AAPT sets it to invite roughly 400 students. Official 2026 numbers: 6,682 scored exams, median 8 and mean 8.90 out of 25, cutoff 16, and 440 students at or above it. Recent years have landed in the mid-to-high teens, and the bar stays high enough that classroom coursework alone rarely closes the gap — it takes dedicated timed practice on past exams.

Is AP Physics C enough preparation for the F=ma exam?

It covers the syllabus but not the difficulty. F=ma is mechanics only, so AP Physics C: Mechanics maps onto the topics — yet the official 2026 median was 8 out of 25, meaning plenty of AP students get about a third right. The gap is in unfamiliar setups, constrained motion, non-inertial frames, and pacing: 25 questions in 75 minutes is about three minutes each. Timed work through AAPT's past-exam archive is what actually moves the score.

Our school in Irvine is not an F=ma test site — how do we register?

Registration goes through the school on the AAPT site, normally done once by a physics teacher or administrator. For the 2026 cycle it was a $75 school fee ($37.50 for AAPT members) plus $15.50 per student, closing January 21. AAPT does not arrange test centers or publish a list of them. The club box above this page shows which Irvine high schools currently have a matching physics club; where there is no club or no history of registering, the next step is asking the school's physics teacher directly, then a community college, university or library if the school will not host.

Who is allowed to proctor the F=ma and USAPhO exams — can a parent do it?

No, parents cannot. AAPT requires an in-person proctor who is not a relative or close acquaintance of any student, holds at least a two-year degree, and uses an official school or non-profit email address — personal addresses are rejected. For-profit test-prep centers and educational services are explicitly barred from proctoring. A parent of a homeschooled student may complete the registration paperwork but must supply an outside proctor, so line this up early rather than near the deadline.

Can a non-citizen or visa-holding Irvine student take the F=ma exam and USAPhO?

F=ma, yes: the student needs to attend a U.S. school and be physically inside the United States on exam day, with no citizenship requirement. USAPhO and the national training camp that follows are open only to U.S. citizens and permanent residents, and require the student to be under 20 as of June 30 of the competition year. For a non-citizen the path normally ends with the F=ma score itself, which is still a legitimate result to report.

What grade should a student start preparing for the F=ma exam?

Most USAPhO qualifiers finish calculus-based mechanics in grade 9 or 10, sit F=ma once in grade 10 as a calibration run, and push for the cutoff in grade 11. AP Physics C is scheduled in grade 11 or 12 at most high schools, so a student who wants to start earlier needs to work through calculus-based mechanics independently rather than waiting on the classroom pace. Starting in grade 12 usually leaves no room for the result to appear in applications, since F=ma is in mid-February and USAPhO in April.

What happens after USAPhO — how does a student make the U.S. Physics Team?

USAPhO awards follow International Physics Olympiad conventions: roughly the top 10–12% take gold, then silver, bronze and honorable mention. About 20 of the highest scorers are invited to a ten-day training camp at the University of Maryland, and five of those students are chosen to represent the United States at the IPhO; recent teams have also competed at the European Physics Olympiad. AAPT added a USAPhO Plus exam in the 2026 cycle as well.

How much does F=ma or USAPhO help an Irvine student's college application?

The scarcity is the point: about 6,700 students sat F=ma in 2026 and 440 qualified for USAPhO. For engineering, physics and EECS applicants, 'USAPhO qualifier' is a credential an admissions reader recognizes instantly, and it stands out for a student applying to engineering or physics programs across the UC system. List it in the Common App Honors section, with the year and level reached; a student who sat F=ma without qualifying can still record it under Activities.
