How workshops run

Workshops enroll in rolling short terms: one seat lets a child rotate through 3 to 4 domains in a year, 7 to 8 weeks each, with a finished piece every session.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the course test?

Three things: hands-on building, inventive thinking, and solving engineering problems with limited resources. The third is the hard part, since students have to make trade-offs under real material constraints rather than follow a known solution, and there is rarely one correct answer to reach.

What grades in Irvine is it for?

Grades 5 to 8, across 35 weeks. EDUBUS is based in Irvine and runs this course as a small in-person group with an online section at the same time. Workshops enroll in rolling short terms, so one seat lets a student rotate through 3 to 4 domains in a year, 7 to 8 weeks each.

What background do Irvine students need?

No prior building experience is required; willingness to work with your hands matters more. Younger students in grades 1 to 3 can start with Little Makers Science and its build, assess, improve habit. For anyone close to the line, check the fit with the teacher first.

What do Irvine parents see each term?

At the end of each 7 to 8 week term a student has several finished devices that have been tested, plus project notes recording the design, the data and each revision. Teachers stay in contact with parents, so progress in building and problem solving is visible beyond how the object looks.

Science Olympiad Engineering or VEX IQ?

It depends on whether the interest is engineering builds or robots. This course is about completing engineering tasks under constraints, with whatever materials are at hand. VEX IQ Robotics Intro combines electronics, mechanics and coding around robots, and starts from zero experience.
