International Mathematical Modeling ChallengeIMMC

IM²C sits at the top of the global secondary-school modeling ladder, and with only two teams per country advancing to the international round, the scarcity far exceeds that of typical math contests. It tests the ability to turn a vague real-world problem into a computable model and argue it clearly — exactly what engineering, data science and economics programs value. For Irvine students it also opens a differentiated track alongside AMC/AIME, showcasing collaboration, technical writing and modeling judgment rather than raw solving speed.

Organizer
COMAP (Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications) together with the NeoUnion ESC Organization
Eligibility
Open to secondary-school (and younger) students worldwide. Teams have one to four students who must be enrolled at the same school, with one teacher serving as faculty advisor. Each country or region may send up to two teams to the international round. The USA Regional IM²C is by invitation: teams that perform well in the fall HiMCM (high school) or MidMCM (middle school) contests receive an invitation from COMAP, and advisors are typically contacted in February with instructions.
Format
An open-ended real-world modeling contest. The 2027 window runs February 1 to April 26, 2027, and each team picks any five consecutive days inside it to download the problem, build their model collaboratively, and submit a solution document electronically. All analysis must be done by the students themselves — reference materials and software are allowed, adult authorship is not — and the advisor submits on the team's behalf while certifying the rules were followed. The USA holds a regional round first to choose its two representative teams; the international round is judged in June by a panel of modeling experts, with results announced in late June and winning work presented at the International Summit and Awards Ceremony.
Contest dates
February 1, 2027 · April 26, 2027
Fees
The official site does not publish an entry fee for the IM²C international round or the United States regional round; the United States region is invitation only and is entered through HiMCM / MidMCM in the fall, which charges its own fee as published on the COMAP site. (No fee is stated officially.)
Awards
The international round recognizes four levels: Outstanding (highest), Meritorious, Honorable Mention and Successful Participant, with certificates issued in the names of the students, their advisor and their school. Outstanding teams present their work at the International Summit and Awards Ceremony. The contest is not primarily cash-driven; its value lies in international recognition and the public showcase of the team's work.

About the competition

The International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IM²C, also written IMMC), founded in 2015 and run jointly by COMAP and the NeoUnion ESC Organization, promotes the teaching of mathematical modeling in secondary schools worldwide.

Unlike traditional math contests, IM²C has no answer key: the problem is an open real-world scenario, and teams must scope it themselves, state assumptions, build a model, test its sensitivity and write a full report. Teams of one to four students must come from the same school, with one teacher as advisor.

The 2027 window runs February 1 to April 26, 2027; within it each team chooses any five consecutive days to download the problem and complete all work, after which the advisor submits and certifies compliance. Advancement has two tiers: each country or region runs its own round and may send up to two teams onward.

The USA Regional IM²C is invitation-only, and the entry point is COMAP’s fall HiMCM (high school) and MidMCM (middle school) contests — strong teams receive an invitation around February.

International papers are judged in June by a panel of modeling experts, with results in late June across four levels: Outstanding, Meritorious, Honorable Mention and Successful Participant, certified in the names of the students, advisor and school.

Judges weigh modeling quality, effectiveness of the analysis, whether assumptions are reasonable and explicitly stated, and clarity of communication — readability counts as much as the model itself.

How to prepare

  • Win your way in through HiMCM or MidMCM first. US teams reach IM²C only by invitation, and the fall modeling contest is the sole entry point — plan it as the real first stage.
  • Build the team around roles, not rankings: make sure someone is strong at model formulation and assumptions, someone is fluent in Python or MATLAB for data work and figures, and someone can turn technical content into a clearly structured English report.
  • Managing the five consecutive days is what separates teams. Run a full rehearsal: day 1 scope and assumptions, days 2–3 build and solve, day 4 sensitivity analysis and validation, day 5 reserved entirely for writing and layout — never leave the report to the last few hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an Irvine high schooler enter IMMC (IM²C) — do we have to do HiMCM first?

You can't register directly. The USA region is invitation-only: COMAP invites teams based on their results in the fall HiMCM (high school) or MidMCM (middle school) contests, and advisors are typically contacted in February with instructions for the USA Regional IM²C. The two winning teams represent the United States in the international round. In practice, the contest to actually sign up for is HiMCM in November, and a student can put together their own team even without an existing modeling club at school.

Can my child do IM²C without competing in HiMCM first?

No. HiMCM and MidMCM are the only entry point for US teams into IM²C — there is no open sign-up. COMAP ran the 2026 HiMCM and MidMCM from November 4 to 17, with registration and fees handled on the COMAP site; no separate IM²C entry fee is published. If this is the goal, the team needs to be assembled a full fall season in advance.

When is IM²C held — are the dates fixed?

No. The 2027 IM²C window runs February 1 to April 26, 2027, and each team picks any five consecutive days inside it. The clock starts the moment the problem is downloaded and does not pause, so choose a stretch that avoids midterms, AP season and other contests. International papers are judged in June, with results announced in late June.

Can an Irvine student's IM²C team include classmates from another school?

No. Teams of one to four students must all be enrolled at the same school, with one teacher from that school serving as faculty advisor and submitting the paper. Cross-school teams are not allowed. Build the team around roles rather than rankings — someone strong at model formulation, someone fluent in Python or MATLAB, someone who can turn the work into a clearly structured English report. A school without an existing team yet can still use an outside course to practice the division of labor and the writing.

During IM²C, can students look things up or use Python — and can a teacher or parent help?

Students may consult references and use software and programming tools, but all of the analysis and solving must be their own work. Adults may not write the paper or build the model, and the advisor certifies compliance when submitting. Sources used must be cited in the report. Put simply: any tool is fair game, but the thinking and the writing have to be the students'.

Should an Irvine student pick IM²C or AMC/AIME?

The two test different skills, and it isn't really either-or. AMC and AIME are timed individual problem-solving contests that reward speed and technique. IM²C is a five-day open-ended team challenge with no answer key, and the deliverable is a full English research report judged on reasonable assumptions, sound analysis and clear communication. Doing both lets an application show solving power alongside teamwork and writing.

What awards does IM²C give, and what level actually counts?

The international round recognizes four levels — Outstanding (highest), Meritorious, Honorable Mention and Successful Participant — with certificates naming the students, the advisor and the school, and Outstanding teams present at the International Summit and Awards Ceremony. For a US student, simply being invited to the USA Regional round, and especially being one of the two teams sent onward, is already a rare line on an application.

Can an Irvine middle schooler compete in IM²C?

Yes. IM²C is open to secondary-school and younger students, and the middle school entry point is COMAP's MidMCM in the fall; strong MidMCM teams can also be invited to the USA Regional round. A realistic plan is to use MidMCM in middle school to learn the rhythm of producing a full report in five days, then compete seriously through HiMCM in high school.
