The International Philosophy Olympiad has run annually since 1993 and is the only philosophy event among the international olympiads; recent editions have drawn delegations from more than fifty countries, with the 34th edition held in Warsaw, Poland in 2026 after national selection rounds involving tens of thousands of students.
The US qualifier is the American Philosophy Olympiad (APO), whose site states that its authority to select the US delegation comes from the American Philosophical Association. Parents should note that although PLATO (the Philosophy Learning and Teaching Organization) was also founded out of the APA and works in pre-college philosophy, it is APO that runs the US IPO qualifier.
Format: APO is an online proctored contest on a weekend in February or March, in which students write a three-hour philosophical essay in French or Spanish using only a paper dictionary - English is excluded because IPO rules forbid writing in your own country’s official language.
The two national winners form the US delegation and write a four-hour essay at the IPO, choosing one of four set topics in English, German, French or Spanish. Judging rewards originality and persuasiveness of argument over name-dropping. There is no entry fee.
