At a Glance

Milton Academy was founded in 1798 and sits in Milton, Massachusetts, just outside Boston. The Upper School serves grades 9 through 12 and enrolls both boarders and day students. In the most recent entering class the school reports 87 new boarding students and 60 new day students. Day admission is open only to families in the Greater Boston area and only in grades 9 and 10; boarding admission is open in grades 9, 10 and 11. Milton also operates lower and middle divisions from kindergarten through grade 8, but boarding exists only in the Upper School.

Academics and Student Body

Milton describes an active learning environment, in and out of the classroom, aimed at developing creative and critical thinkers who are unafraid to express their ideas. The entering class figures give a sense of the student body: 22 percent international students, 29 countries and 23 states represented, and 55 percent students of color. The school does not publish a student-faculty ratio or an average class size on the pages reviewed here, so ask the admission office for both, along with how departments place students into course levels.

Applying

Applications for fall 2027 entry are due January 15, 2027, with decisions on March 10, 2027. Testing is optional: the school says all candidates are welcome, but not required, to submit standardized test results, which covers the SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) and the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) alike. An interview is required and must be completed by January 15, either on campus or virtually. The application fee is $65 for domestic applicants and $125 for international applicants, with waivers available for financial hardship.

Cost and Financial Aid

Published 2026-27 tuition is $79,900 for boarding and $69,900 for day students. Thirty-seven percent of the student body receives aid, the average grant covers 77 percent of tuition, and the annual aid budget is $16.5 million. In the entering class, 39 percent of students received aid with an average award of $64,533. Aid applications go through Clarity, due January 31 for new families, two weeks after the admission deadline, with a $65 submission fee.

For International and California Families

Milton states directly that financial aid is available to applicants who are not American citizens or legal permanent residents, which is worth confirming in writing when you apply. For English proficiency, the school strongly suggests TOEFL (code 8125), IELTS or Duolingo results from applicants whose first language is not English or who have not spent at least two years in an English-medium school.

For a family in Irvine, the practical questions are the same ones every cross-country boarding decision raises. A ninth grader leaves home at about fourteen and is supervised day to day by dorm faculty, so guardianship, break travel and emergency contacts need to be settled before enrollment. Massachusetts runs three hours ahead of California, and interviews and parent programming follow Eastern time. Orange County to Boston is a transcontinental flight, and Thanksgiving, winter and spring break airfare belongs in the annual budget.

Because testing is optional here, preparation time may be better spent on course selection and interview practice than on chasing a marginal score.
