Orange County Private Schools That Require the ISEE or SSAT

Seven of the 116 Orange County private schools in our database ask applicants for an ISEE or SSAT score. Before building a year around that test, it helps to see what it measures and what else comes attached to this particular group of schools.

What the ISEE measures

The ISEE is the entrance exam used by most independent day schools. It covers verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, quantitative reasoning and mathematics, plus an unscored essay that admissions offices receive in the student’s own handwriting.

Results are reported as stanines on a nine-point scale, not as percentages. The comparison group is other applicants in the same grade nationally, not classmates at the current school, which is where parents most often misread a first score report. Few schools publish a cutoff, so rather than guess, ask the admissions office on your visit day how a given band reads in this year’s pool.

ISEE or SSAT

Only Sage Hill School lists both tests; the other six name the ISEE. The SSAT is the more common requirement at boarding schools, so the comparison matters mainly if your list reaches beyond the county. Preparation for each is described under ISEE and SSAT.

The test comes with a commute and a budget

This filter is not only about testing. Six of the seven schools sit in the Newport Beach and coastal south county corridor, and published tuition for the current year runs from $9,912 at Newport Christian School to $49,500 at Sage Hill School.

Those are published rates rather than final costs. Ask each school what fees sit on top and how aid decisions are timed. And if you are driving from Irvine, make the trip once on a school-day morning at the real hour before committing to a testing year.

A realistic runway

Nine to twelve months is the working assumption: a diagnostic to locate the gap, a summer on fundamentals, then timed practice through the fall so scores land ahead of deadlines.

Three things to confirm school by school: which testing season is accepted, how more than one sitting is treated, and whether the score deadline falls on the same date as the application deadline. Skipping those questions is what forces families to rebuild the calendar in December.

One thing not to cut during that year: the activities a child has stuck with. Teacher recommendations and interviews are where sustained commitment shows, and a season of nothing but test practice is visible in both.

The score is one input
