For most students, two to three SAT sittings is the sensible range: a first attempt in the spring of junior year, a second in the fall of senior year, and a third only if needed. Score movement comes from preparation time, not from repeated exposure to the test. This guide is for families of students in grades 10 through 12 and covers the 2026-27 dates and score release schedule, how superscoring actually works, and one policy California applicants should confirm first.
2026-27 Test Dates and Deadlines
College Board has published eight weekend test dates. All registration deadlines close at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time, after which a late registration window opens at an additional fee.
| Test date | Registration deadline | Late registration |
|---|---|---|
| August 22, 2026 | August 7 | August 11 |
| September 12, 2026 | August 28 | September 1 |
| October 3, 2026 | September 18 | September 22 |
| November 7, 2026 | October 23 | October 27 |
| December 5, 2026 | November 20 | November 24 |
| March 6, 2027 | February 19 | February 23 |
| May 1, 2027 | April 16 | April 20 |
| June 5, 2027 | May 21 | May 25 |
Most weekend scores are released 2 to 4 weeks after test day. For fall 2026 the schedule is: August 22 scores on September 4, September 12 scores on September 25, October 3 scores on October 16, November 7 scores on November 20, and December 5 scores on December 18. In-school assessments run on separate windows: SAT School Day, PSAT/NMSQT, and PSAT 8/9 are administered between October 1 and October 30, 2026, and SAT School Day, PSAT 10, and PSAT 8/9 between March 1 and April 30, 2027. The junior-year PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, and it happens only once.
College Board has also published anticipated fall 2027 dates: August 28, September 18, October 2, November 6, and December 4, 2027.
Superscoring Is a College Policy, Not a College Board Policy
Two mechanisms are easy to confuse. What College Board provides is Score Choice: students select which reports to send, by test date, and each registration includes free sends to up to four organizations. Scores travel as complete reports, so a student cannot send the Math score from one date with the Reading and Writing score from another.
Superscoring happens on the college side. Institutions that superscore take the highest section scores across the reports they receive and combine them, so whether it helps depends entirely on the target school’s policy. Some colleges also require all scores, which makes Score Choice inapplicable there. Confirm each school’s requirement first, then decide how many times to test.
One Policy California Applicants Should Confirm First
The University of California does not consider SAT or ACT scores in freshman admission decisions or scholarship awards. Submitted scores may only serve as an alternate way to meet minimum eligibility requirements, or for course placement after enrollment. For a student applying only within that system, the SAT carries very limited weight; for a student also applying to private or out-of-state universities, it still matters on those schools’ terms. Settle this before setting a testing count.
A Timeline from Junior to Senior Year
- Spring of grade 10 through fall of grade 11: build reading and grammar fundamentals, and take the PSAT/NMSQT in October.
- December through February of grade 11: use the PSAT result to size the gap and begin structured preparation.
- March or May of grade 11: first official sitting, with more than six months left to adjust.
- June of grade 11 through summer: target the weaker section based on the first score report.
- August or September of grade 12: second sitting. The August 22 test reports on September 4.
- October or November of grade 12: a third sitting only if the first two fall short. November 7 scores arrive on November 20, the last usable point before most early deadlines.
Common Mistakes
First, treating the first official sitting as a practice run; practice tests belong outside the official administrations. Second, missing deadlines, since the late window lasts only a few days and carries an added fee. Third, assuming every college superscores. Fourth, scheduling a first attempt in December, by which point most November early deadlines have passed.
What EDUBUS Recommends
The number of sittings is not the variable that matters; the length of the preparation cycle is. Setting the first official test in March or May of junior year means preparation should start in the first semester of that year, because reading and grammar gains accumulate over semesters, not over the weeks between two test dates. We recommend confirming whether target schools superscore and whether they require all scores, then working backward to select test dates. The EDUBUS SAT reading and grammar program with Digital SAT intensive runs year-round classes and full-length practice tests aligned to this timeline.
