IEA Student Essay CompetitionsMonetary Policy Essay Prize / Dorian Fisher Memorial Prize

The IEA is one of Britain's oldest free-market think tanks, and its student essay prizes pay unusually well for this level (GBP 1,500 for the Sixth Form winner). Shortlisted entrants also face semi-final and final rounds, so the contest tests written argument plus oral defence - a structure rarely found in high-school essay competitions.

Organizer
Institute of Economic Affairs (with the Institute of International Monetary Research and the Vinson Centre)
Eligibility
The current Monetary Policy Essay Prize runs two separate competitions: a Sixth Form division (students in the final two years of secondary school, including A-Level and IB students internationally) and an Undergraduate division. The historic Dorian Fisher Memorial Prize was for A-Level and IB students who had not entered tertiary education, but that page has not been updated since the 2022 edition. The IEA also runs The Budget Challenge for school teams.
Format
The 2026 Monetary Policy Essay Prize question is whether imposing tariffs raises the price level and/or inflation, with comment on Donald Trump's enthusiasm for tariffs. Essays are capped at 2,500 words (in-text references count, bibliography does not) and submitted as a PDF through the division's online form by 23:59 on 31 August 2026. Shortlisted entrants take part in semi-finals on 19-20 October 2026 and finals on 1-2 December 2026. The historic Dorian Fisher format was a ~1,200-word essay plus two 500-word short answers.
Contest dates
August 31, 2026 · October 19, 2026 · December 1, 2026
Fees
The official site lists no entry fee; entry has been free in past years.
Awards
2026 Monetary Policy Essay Prize: Sixth Form first prize GBP 1,500 with two runners-up at GBP 750 each; Undergraduate first prize GBP 2,500 plus a Hayek Research Internship, with two runners-up at GBP 1,000 each. The historic Dorian Fisher Prize awarded GBP 500 to the winner, GBP 250 to each of three runners-up, GBP 500 to the school with the most entries, and invited the top 20 to an autumn event.

About the competition

The Institute of Economic Affairs, a long-established British free-market think tank, has run economics essay competitions for school and university students for years. The best-known is the Dorian Fisher Memorial Prize, named for the wife of founder Sir Antony Fisher, with a ~1,200-word essay plus two 500-word answers for A-Level and IB students and a GBP 500 top prize.

Families should note, however, that the IEA’s Dorian Fisher page still shows the 2022 edition and no newer call has appeared.

The institute’s active student essay competition is now the Monetary Policy Essay Prize, run with the Institute of International Monetary Research and the Vinson Centre: the 2026 question asks whether tariffs raise the price level and/or inflation, with comment on Donald Trump’s tariff enthusiasm, capped at 2,500 words and due 31 August 2026.

Sixth Form and Undergraduate divisions are judged separately, with GBP 1,500 for the school-level winner and GBP 750 for each of two runners-up, and shortlisted entrants continue to semi-finals in October and finals in December. The IEA also runs The Budget Challenge for school teams.

The practical plan for an Irvine student is to treat the Monetary Policy Prize as the main target over the summer and keep Dorian Fisher as a watch-list item. The IEA writes from a free-market tradition; understand it, but do not write to flatter it.

How to prepare

  • Confirm which prize you are entering: the current Monetary Policy Essay Prize (deadline end of August) or the Dorian Fisher Prize, whose page still shows 2022 - do not prepare against outdated rules.
  • 2,500 words is generous for this level, but in-text references count toward the limit, so budget citations before drafting.
  • On tariffs and inflation, distinguish carefully between a one-off rise in the price level and sustained inflation; that distinction is exactly what judges look for.
  • Shortlisted entrants face semi-final and final rounds, so build a three-minute spoken version of your argument while you write.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the IEA Dorian Fisher Memorial Prize still running, and which IEA contest should we enter?

Unclear. The IEA's Dorian Fisher page and its student essay competition page still show the 2022 edition with no newer call for entries. The competitions the IEA is clearly running are the Monetary Policy Essay Prize, whose 2026 deadline was 31 August, and The Budget Challenge for school teams. Prepare against the Monetary Policy rules, not the old Dorian Fisher format of a 1,200-word essay plus two 500-word answers.

Can Irvine juniors and seniors enter the Sixth Form division?

The organisers say international entrants are welcome. The Sixth Form division corresponds to the final two years of secondary school, roughly US grades 11 and 12, so Irvine Unified School District juniors and seniors map straightforwardly; the Undergraduate division is for university students, and the two are judged separately with separate submission forms. Because curricula differ by country, email the education address listed on the IEA site to confirm how your grade maps before you submit into the wrong division.

If shortlisted for the IEA essay prize, do you have to travel to the UK for the semi-final and final?

Yes, and attendance is in person - this is the first thing an Irvine family should price out. In the 2026 cycle the semi-finals were held at the Vinson Centre, University of Buckingham in October (19 October for sixth formers) and the finals at the IEA in London in December (1 December for sixth formers), and the organisers state that entrants must attend both rounds. Confirm you can make two autumn trips to the UK before committing.

What are the IEA essay word limit and formatting rules?

The cap is 2,500 words using Harvard-style citations; in-text references count toward the limit while the bibliography does not. Formatting must be A4, double-spaced, Arial 12-point, submitted as a PDF through the online form for your division. Your name and contact details go in the form only, never in the document. 2,500 words is generous for this level, but since citations count, budget them before you start drafting.

What was the 2026 IEA Monetary Policy Essay Prize question, and what level is expected?

The question asked whether imposing tariffs raises the price level and/or inflation, with comment on Donald Trump's enthusiasm for tariffs. The distinction that decides these essays is between a one-off rise in the price level and sustained inflation; conflating the two costs marks almost automatically. The level expected sits just above A-Level or AP Macro: able to read central bank and IMF material and use empirical literature properly rather than paraphrasing news coverage.

How much does the IEA essay prize pay?

In 2026 the Sixth Form winner received GBP 1,500 with two runners-up at GBP 750 each, while the Undergraduate winner received GBP 2,500 plus a Hayek Research Internship, with two runners-up at GBP 1,000. That is at the high end for a school-level economics essay contest. The historic Dorian Fisher Prize paid GBP 500 to the winner and GBP 250 to each of three runners-up. No entry fee is listed and past editions have been free.

The IEA is a free-market think tank - should an essay echo its views?

No, and simply echoing them backfires. Judging turns on the quality of the argument and the use of evidence. Knowing the free-market canon - price signals, regulatory cost, public choice - helps you engage seriously, but an essay that repeats the institute's position without handling objections reads as weak reasoning. The safer structure is to give one full paragraph to the strongest counter-argument before answering it.

Can a student with no macroeconomics background write the IEA monetary policy essay?

Yes, but only after a round of foundational reading. A workable path: get clear on inflation, money supply, the price level and supply shocks using an AP Macro text or the first half of Mankiw; then read two or three policy papers from the Federal Reserve, the Bank of England or the IMF plus one empirical paper on tariffs; and pull data from primary sources such as FRED, the IMF and the BLS. Two summer months is enough - just do not skip the concepts. Irvine students who want structured argument practice beyond the reading list can also work through the IEA essay prep course.
