32 weeks a year. Beginners start with Rocketry Design intro.
How to start
Start with a placement assessment. We use it to set the level and class, then confirm the year plan with the family. For schedules, tuition, and bundle offers, request the 2026-27 program guide through the form below.

What grades can Irvine students join in?
Grades 7 to 12. The class runs 32 weeks a year with no session during competition weeks, so the calendar tracks the season. Content spans design, calculation, and construction and assumes some math and physics footing; the placement assessment sets the level.
Can a beginner join?
Start with Rocketry Design intro. The intro course covers principles, structures, and safety procedures, and the competition class builds on that with design and test flights carried out under contest rules. Construction is hands-on work, and the in-person small groups in Irvine are where building and adjustment happen, so students with no hands-on experience tend to fall behind if they skip the intro.
Which competitions does the class prepare for?
The national model rocketry championship, the FAI Spacemodeling World Cup, and the FAI world championships. FAI is the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, which organizes the two international events. Categories, rules, and entry requirements are revised annually, so follow the organizer's published rules for the current year.
What science background do Irvine high schoolers need?
Mainly algebra and basic mechanics. Students work with the relationships among weight, thrust, drag, and altitude, then adjust the design from test flight data. Schools in Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) move through science at different paces; the class supplies the calculation methods it needs, but a student well behind in school science should build that base first.
How does rocketry help a University of California application?
It demonstrates a complete engineering cycle. Design, construction, test flights, and iteration all leave a documented record with data behind it. Activities on the University of California (UC) application are self-reported, and a project with that kind of record reads far stronger than a stated interest. Competitions and activities are best planned together through the college admissions services.
